Date for your Diaries

Nautical Festival

A date for your diary if you can be anywhere near our home port of Faversham in July, the 2014, this year’s Faversham Nautical Festival. This is once more the product of the Kentish Sail Association and takes place on Sat/Sun the 12th and 13th of July. More info on the Kentish Sail website, to which I will put a link on our Useful Links page.

Thames Heritage Alliance

I am happy to publish the following concerning new organisation, the Thames Heritage Alliance and to insert a link to this website in our useful links tab. This notice comes from Griselda Cann-Mussett, friend of Cambria and prime mover in the Faversham Creek Trust.

Griselda writes, “I’d like to draw your attention to https://thamesheritagealliance.wordpress.com/which is a website I have set up in conjunction with Dido Berkeley, who as you probably know is a life-long campaigner for the River Thames.
She is hoping to muster widespread support for her idea that the Thames needs a statutory body to represent it in all planning decisions. No-one does that, at the moment, while the developmental pressures continue to build – all land-based, and no-one thinking about maritime interests, biodiversity, flood and fresh-water control, etc.
We are looking for organisations willing to appear as links, and to link back to the website. Ultimately she is looking for a wide range of organisations such as the Tower of London, National Maritime Museum, etc. but it would be wonderful to have Cambria, the Sailing Barge Trust, the Tall Ships, Sail Training Association, and Essex boatyards and quays etc all joining up to show support.
I’d love to hear your comments!
thanks

Thank you for that Griselda – we are happy to help.

Today’s excellent picture comes from another friend of Cambria, Barge-book author Nick Ardley and is taken from his own clinker-hull sloop, Whimbrel. Our crew were all waving at him, he says – he thinks this is First Mate Denis up near the port bow. There, Denis – you can run away to sea but you still won’t escape from the website spies!

A Bridge Too Far

Mast at Night

Oh Dear. It seems that Faversham’s Swing Bridge is in need of repair or replacement and this has rather snookered the plans of Faversham Creek Trust to get the basin (upstream from the bridge) dredged and opened up for larger vessels as part of the campaign to give the area back its Maritime Trades. Faversham Council tell us that the repairs or replacement could be as long as 5 years away, so Faversham Creek Trust have had to park their plans to restore the Purifier Building as a centre for workshops and shipwright appenticeships. So says Faversham Creek Trust in their newsy website at http://favershamcreektrust.com/2012/10/21/trouble-at-bridge-but-there-is-a-way-forward/ .

Trust Chair, Griselda Cann-Mussett is quoted as saying “we have done some research into this and we know that a new lifting bridge could be supplied and fitted for a relatively modest cost”, so hopefully all is not lost.

The Trust AGM takes place in the Alexander Centre at 7:30 pm on Tuesday November 20th. I expect the bridge will feature high in discussions!

Griselda’s Traffic Census latest

A blog is probably no place to be publishing a “stop press!” notice but just in case we can do any good.

Griselda’s Traffic Census on Faversham Swing Bridge, you may have seen has been on and then off (Kent County Council were going to do it themselves). Well as of about 05:30 this morning, it’s back on, so if you were thinking of getting involved, please do now contact Griselda Cann-Mussett again. As she says, “New STOP PRESS. We DO need volunteers for a traffic census. We have two practice sessions: 9-10am this Saturday (16th June), and again Tues 19 June. The counts will be for 12 hours on the 24th, 26th and 30th of June. Shifts are 2 hours. Please contact me a.s.a.p. if you can help.”

Meanwhile, I am now playing on both the ‘old’ and the ‘new’ websites, so I hope you can see this blog in both places. If you know the location of the new pages and fancy getting involved as a ‘critic’ or checker, there is a ‘comments’ box on the new site. I appreciate some of you are probably getting frustrated not knowing where the new site is but that is because it is still under construction and testing and has not been fully released yet. Patience, friends. Everything of import will continue to be published on the ‘old’ site for now.
