Stocking Filler?

From Chris Harvey of the Thames Sailing Barge Trust via, in this case, an email from Restoration Project Manager, William Collard (Thank you, William) a possible last minute stocking filler if you are stuck for a gift for the barge-nut in your life.

Chris says “Christmas is fast approaching, and here’s a gift idea for anyone you know who is fond of Thames sailing barges – or maybe you just want to treat yourself.  All you need to know about our beautiful 2015 calendar and how to order can be found on the attached flyer.  Any purchases you make will be helping us to looking after our two historic barges, Centaur and Pudge“.

Meanwhile, on Cambria, another burst of heroic hard work from the team sees our poly tunnel sheeting now stretched across the arches and we are nicely snugged down for the winter re-fit. Inevitably the existing team are always asking around for more volunteers and now, if you fancy a bit of painting or cleaning or any other barge related work, you will be all warm and dry out of the wind and weather.

Another Chance to Sail

Just in from Dave Brooks on Facebook

“Cambria will be leaving Gravesend on the 9th Sept at 5.00 am in the morning to travel up to St Katharine Dock. There are a limited number of places priced £75.00. Travel up the Thames and a chance of seeing some of the Tall Ships. Email Cambria Trust for further details on CambriaTrustSecretary@live.co.uk”

A bit short notice and a nice early start for you, but get in touch if you fancy it.

The barge will be in St Katharine Dock over the weekend of 13th/14th September and open to the public with lots of we helpful volunteers to show you around. Please drop in if you are free.

Dave also tells me that the 2015 Calendar will soon be ready and for sale. Watch this space.

Photos for Calendar, Please

Volunteers, Cambria Shop Managers and prime movers in making last year’s lovely Cambria Calendar happen, Mark and Cathy Chapman have sent me the following request.

BecalmedThames2013

Becalmed Thames 2013, from the Cliffe shore. Picture by Mark Chapman, 2013.

As you will have all been out at the weekend in the sunshine watching the almost windless Thames Match, please does anyone have any  “Photos of Cambria that are large enough to be printed on A4 for next year’s possible calendar which would obviously need printing this year. Could they please be emailed to us on our Email address markandcathychapman@yahoo.co.uk. We would be looking at putting it together mid August on”. Past and present photo’s would be appreciated. Thank you.

If you do not know what this translates to, I think anything bigger than about 2 Meg would do. I take mine at about 4 meg. Find the image on your computer and right-click “Open With Paint”. If it more than fills the screen it is probably detailed enough. Most mobile phone images would not be useful but check with Mark and Cathy on the email address given.

Thank you all for that. I sadly cannot help this year as I now live 500 miles from the nearest barge and haven’t so much as set foot on Cambria since last autumn. Ah well. Such is life.

Move to Oare

Cambria arrives Oare Creek 010313

If you have been following the progress of this winter refit on our calendar page you’ll have been expecting a “Tow to Oare Creek” where the barge goes into dry dock for painting and attention. Dave Brooks has been on the case and has posted some nice pictures in the Cambria Sailing Barge area of FaceBook.

Dave supplied the following commentary. “Cambria made it to Oare creek safely today. Whilst she is at Oare, Tim Goldsack will be carrying out a list of jobs we require to be completed before she sails in April.
Also whilst she is in dry dock we require as many painters as we can to smarten her up. This year we will be spared the mucky job of anti-fouling as Tim and his team are doing it.
If possible we would like to get the hull scraped and painted.
This weekend, if weather permits, the mainmast needs painting. (Access to dry dock with extreme care this weekend as only a temporary gang plank, fixed gang plank will be in place next weekend.)
Next weekend the re-rigging will start so as many hands as possible to help with this and the last of the painting would be appreciated, please lat me know if you can attend”.

Thank you to all the volunteers who can help with this – please get your ‘bids’ in to Dave as soon as possible

Calendar Received

Today I received through the post, my Cambria 2013 Calendar and, now that I have seen it in the flesh, I can confirm that it is a lovely thing to have and to put on the wall. I love the big glossy photo’s (as I said, taken mainly by Mark C in bright sunshine during the races) and also (always a concern for making a calendar useful rather than just pretty) there is plenty of space to write your events per day. Mine is already ‘up there’ and has a number of 2013 events written into it. I am not sure whether there is any more point me hawking this, as they may well be sold out. I have emailed Cathy C to check. I will let you know.

Meanwhile ace rooter-out of bizarre, sailing-related video on You-Tube, David Rye, has come up with a Thanksgiving Day related video showing the USA Founding Fathers’ Mayflower 2 reproduction tall ship, built in the 50’s for a film and now on display to the public. The film includes interviews with the Project Director, various carpenters and some of the actors who now show people round the ship while dressed in period costume.

Nice one, David. Thanks for that.

2013 Calendar

2013 Calendar

2013 Calendar, designed by Rita Phillips, of Phillips Design, assisted by Peter Phillips

Word comes from our Membership Secretary and Shop Manager, Cathy Chapman, that she has been working away on a Calendar for 2013, with Peter Phillips of Thalatta. I have seen the whole thing, all 13 images and can vouch for the beauty and quality of each one. They are mainly ‘whole barge’ shots, generally in bright sunshine while racing, though August has us moored up and December is a 3/4 hull close-up with the new stripey leeboards.  They are all this year’s, so we have the Rotary club logo tops’l.

Cathy is now trying to estimate how many to print so that she can also firm up on price. Please if you would be interested in any calendars please let us know on markandcathy@mail.com
